Peeing every 2 hours throughout the night, is this normal?

I had a Supracervical hysterectomy a week ago today, June 6th. I returned home last Thursday. I had no problem peeing once my catheter came out. I have been trying to drink alot of water as recommended by hyster sisters but it has not been excessive. Now when I go to sleep around midnight, I have been getting up every two hours to pee. Is this normal? I am wondering if I will ever be able to sleep four hours again without having to run to the bathroom.
Please advise me of your experience.

Were you very swollen after surgery? I know I was, in the face, and extremities...I had gained 10 lbs when I weighed on day 4! It was all water (from the IV) and I also had frequent bathroom trips and could not sleep long during the night. Once all the water was cleared from my system, I lost the 10 lbs plus a few and was able to sleep without potty breaks.

Do you have any burning or pain when you pee? (Pain at the end of emptying your bladder is common due to surgery at first.) Do you think you could have a UTI? Give your doctor a call if you are still worried. Or, if you have a post-op visit in a day or so, you could ask about it then.

Good luck for a smooth recovery!

I am 12 days, and had this same thing happen, at about the same point you are. I even went to me Uro. I discovered a couple of days later......it is probably water....from all the fluids they gave you at that the castle. You will probably start to feel not so puffy and better. This is what happened to me, they told me it is called 3rd stage, that you hold alot of the fluids that they put into you, and then when your body is ready, it will release it, and yes mainly thru pee, since we are not supposed to be working up a sweat. I would check with your DR, if it keeps up! But keep drinking the water....because you can become dehydrated very easily now. I found that after this was done, I felt better and started sleeping better, it was my turing point. I hope all goes better for you, I am doing Great now!!!

Peeing every 2 hours throughout the night, is this normal?

Amyr,

I had the same experience after returning home...had no troubles in the hospital but then started going every couple hours without being able to fully empty my bladder when I got home.

I called the doc and she had me come back in. They needed to make sure that I didn't have a UTI. They also did an ultrasound and found a 'pool' of liquid in my belly that was putting pressure on my bladder and right ureter. An IVP test at the hospital confirmed that it wasn't a 'urine pool' caused by a leaking ureter. So, the determination was that it was large hematoma. (It will apparently re-aborb sooner or later.)

In order to ease some of the pressure caused by the 'normal' swelling, the doc had me take 2 doses of ibuprofen. BUT, don't do this on your own as ibuprofen can cause additional bleeding (hence, my only taking 2 doses). At any rate, that seemed to be enough to lessen the pressure enough to allow things to begin flowing normally again despite the pressure from the hematoma.

Definitely call your doc. They may want to confirm that you don't have a UTI - and then you can also ask if there's anything you can take to reduce swelling. There is a prescription med they can give you that reduces swelling but doesn't contain ibuprofen - they gave it to me in the hospital, come to find out, hence the 'free flow' with no problems there.

Good luck! And rest assured, you are not alone with this.

Happy flowers answered well. The human body doesn't understand surgery. All it knows is that it has been *injured and injured badly at that*. Your body attempts to hold on to all fluids to protect itself and maintain a blood pressure.

After a while, your body realizes that it is not bleeding out and starts to normalize itself. This includes peeing. Lots of peeing.

There are exceptions though, so call your doctor's office if you are concerned.

Take care of yourself and find the time for pampering!

Dee
