The history of food halls dates back to ancient times, as the first covered shopping structure was built by the Roman Emperor Trajan. Speaking of modern times, food courts emerged in the 1970s in the United States as the development of shopping malls was on its rise. Shoppers visited them to have a quick bite or to enjoy a delicious food in their favorite restaurant. The concept of a food court was reconsidered in 2007 after Oscar Farinetti opened the first food hall that offered healthy and unique dishes and a chef-driven menu.
